My Story - Laniakea Leathercrafts
- The Passion -
In 2021, I fell into a trance by the art of leathercraft after watching an ASMR-style video of someone making a leather wallet. My first project came shortly after, when I picked up some basic tools and some cheap leather. I made simple card wallet that couldn’t even fit cards. It was painful to make and even more painful to look at. But I enjoyed it enough to keep going and learn from all of my mistakes, which are still not in short supply! But this filled a creative void, hand-making something tangible, something you can hold and use. This art sparked a passion in me.
Jump to present time, my desire to create continues to grow as I explore the world of fine leathercraft and design. I find most of my inspiration in Japanese and European leatherwork, both the utilitarian aspects of Japanese craft and the elegant, luxurious feel of European works. It is my aim to blend contemporary aesthetics while maintaining that practicality and usefulness.
Every piece is measured, cut, stitched, and finished completely by hand. I obsess over every detail throughout the design and build process. All of the leather used is ethically sourced from esteemed tanneries from Italy and Japan.
- The Name -
Laniakea, Hawaiian for ‘immense heaven’, is a massive celestial home to over 100,000 galaxies, including our little Milky Way. This galaxy supercluster spans 250 million light years wide and at such a colossal scale, I was left speechless. It’s vast, mesmerizing. and incomprehensible. Yet, it’s made up of an infinite amount of tiny, intricate details. It truly puts our existence into perspective, either making you feel extremely insignificant or quite special.
Laniakea Leathercrafts is my attempt at making something special. As I focus on every little detail of a project and stitch them together, I’m left with something greater than the sum of its parts, something to last for generations.
